José Ramírez flamenco guitars are built in the Ramírez workshop in Madrid, the oldest continuously operating guitar house in Spain, founded in 1882. The same family that built instruments for Segovia and Tárrega makes flamenco guitars with the bright, immediate, percussive voice that flamenco demands, backed by a lifetime of workshop knowledge. XGuitars is an authorized Ramírez dealer, and every Ramírez flamenco guitar is set up and inspected by hand in Asheville before it ships.
The Ramírez Flamenco Line
Estudio 140 Flamenca Blanca — The most accessible way into the Ramírez flamenco sound: a solid spruce top over solid Spanish cypress, ebony fingerboard, bone nut and saddle, and Rubner tuners. A proper blanca with the snap and quick decay that traditional accompaniment calls for. A Negra version with rosewood back and sides is also made.
Sencillo Flamenca Negra — Developed with working flamenco guitarists, the Sencillo pairs a spruce top with solid Indian rosewood for powerful bass, force, and balance. The negra construction adds sustain and depth, which makes it a favorite for solo concert playing and for players who also work in jazz, bossa nova, and Latin styles.
Flamenca 1A, Blanca and Negra — The top of the Ramírez flamenco range, handmade in the Madrid workshop by the master builders and signed on the label. These are professional concert instruments in the full Ramírez tradition, available in cypress (blanca) or rosewood (negra).
Blanca or Negra?
A flamenca blanca uses Spanish cypress for the back and sides. It is light, dry, and bright, with a fast decay that keeps rasgueado and golpe clean, and it is the traditional choice for accompanying cante and baile. A flamenca negra uses rosewood instead, adding sustain, bass depth, and some classical warmth; it suits concert soloists and players who move between flamenco and classical repertoire. Both styles have the low action, thin top, and golpeador that set a flamenco guitar apart from a classical. Our classical vs. flamenco guide goes into more detail.
Every Ramírez Flamenco Guitar Is Set Up Before It Ships
Flamenco guitars live on low action, and low action leaves no room for error. I play through every note, set the saddle and nut heights so the action is low but buzz-free, and check intonation, neck relief, fret ends, tuning machines, golpeador adhesion, and finish before any guitar leaves the shop. You then have seven full days to play it at home and decide. — Geoff Ferdón, Owner, XGuitars
Frequently Asked Questions
Are Ramírez flamenco guitars made in Spain?
Yes. Every Ramírez guitar is built in Madrid. The Estudio and Sencillo models are made in the Ramírez factory workshop under the family's supervision; the 1A models are handmade by the master luthiers and signed.
Which Ramírez flamenco guitar should I start with?
The Estudio 140 Flamenca is the right first Ramírez for most players: all-solid construction and the authentic Ramírez voice at the most approachable price in the line. Step up to the Sencillo for a concert-ready negra, and to the 1A when you want the signed, fully handmade instrument.
What strings come on a Ramírez flamenco guitar?
Ramírez ships its guitars with its own strings; most flamenco players stay with medium or high tension for a crisp attack. See our string tension guide or browse Ramírez strings.
Do Ramírez guitars come with a case and warranty?
Every Ramírez guitar ships with its hardshell case and carries the Ramírez manufacturer's warranty, backed by our own guarantee, which covers the shipping costs of any warranty work.
