Hanika 54 PF — A German-Made Spruce-Top Classical Guitar from the Recital Line
The Hanika 54 PF is a Recital Line classical guitar built in Germany with solid tonewoods throughout. It pairs a Grade 3 spruce soundboard with Grade 3 east Indian rosewood back and sides. Where its sibling the 54 PC uses cedar for a warmer, more immediate sound, the spruce-topped 54 PF offers a brighter initial character with greater dynamic range and headroom. Spruce tops tend to start out more focused and transparent, then develop warmth and complexity as the wood opens up over time with regular playing.
Matte Finish for Enhanced Resonance
The 54 PF is finished in Hanika's HE matte varnish with closed pores across both the soundboard and body. Matte finishes use a thinner coating than traditional high-gloss lacquer, which allows the tonewoods to vibrate with less dampening. The result is a more open, responsive sound character compared to a gloss-finished guitar at the same level. It also gives the instrument a clean, understated look with a smooth feel under the hands.
Construction and Materials
The neck is cedro laminated with African blackwood for long-term stability and resistance to warping. The African blackwood fretboard and rosewood bridge provide dense, durable playing and contact surfaces. Hanika uses a 5-fold asymmetrical flat bracing pattern in spruce on the soundboard, designed to balance projection with tonal complexity across the full range of the instrument. The ebony headplate, Makassar rosette, and mahogany soundboard binding reflect the level of detail found throughout the Recital Line.
Rubner R2 Tuning Machines
The 54 PF comes equipped with Rubner R2 gold tuning machines with Teflon-mounted bearings and bushed holes. Rubner has been manufacturing tuning machines in Germany since 1864, and their R2 model is a reliable, smooth-operating machine used across many mid-range and upper-level classical guitars.
Spruce vs. Cedar — Choosing Between the 54 PF and 54 PC
The 54 PF and 54 PC share identical construction, bracing, hardware, and finish — the only difference is the soundboard wood. Spruce (PF) tends to produce a clearer, more articulate tone with sharper note definition, stronger projection, and a wider dynamic window. It rewards players who use a range of tone colors and dynamics in their playing. Cedar (PC) responds more quickly with a warmer, darker fundamental and is often preferred for its immediacy and forgiveness at lower volumes. Neither is inherently better — the choice comes down to tonal preference and playing style.
