Ibanez Axe Design Lab SML721 Electric Guitar - Rose Gold Chameleon
The SML721 comes out of Ibanez's Axe Design Lab — the arm of the company given room to depart from the established RG and S templates. What sets this model apart is not the body shape but the electronics: the Dyna-MIX10 system extracts ten distinct pickup voicings from a two-humbucker layout, which is a considerably wider palette than a conventional three-way switch allows.
The Dyna-MIX10 System
Two humbuckers routed through Dyna-MIX10 produce ten selectable configurations — series and parallel combinations, coil splits, and out-of-phase voicings that a standard selector cannot access. In practice, this means one instrument covers territory that would ordinarily require swapping guitars mid-set: authentic single-coil chime in one position, full humbucker weight in another, and a range of usable in-between tones that are genuinely distinct rather than marginal variations.
Construction and Feel
The nyatoh body supplies a rich mid-low foundation, while the maple and walnut neck delivers the fast, stable feel Ibanez necks are known for. The rosewood fretboard adds warmth and a smooth playing surface. Rose Gold Chameleon is a shifting finish that reads differently depending on light and viewing angle — an unusual choice on an instrument at this price and one of the reasons the model draws attention on a wall.
