The JBBM40 is the signature model for J.B. Brubaker of August Burns Red, and it reflects the demands of a guitarist who has spent two decades playing technical metalcore in front of large rooms. The specification is direct: active humbuckers, a stable multi-piece neck, and an ebony fretboard — the components that hold up under sustained high-gain, high-precision playing.
Active Pickups
Active humbuckers use a battery-powered preamp to deliver consistent high output with a very low noise floor. For a player working at high gain across a full set, that consistency matters more than it might in a studio context — the pickups do not lose definition as the signal chain gets pushed, and they stay quiet between passages where a passive set would be humming. The tradeoff is a somewhat more controlled, compressed response, which for aggressive rhythm work is a feature rather than a limitation.
Construction
The okoume body sits lighter than mahogany while retaining a similar warmth and midrange presence — a meaningful difference over a two-hour set. The three-piece maple and bubinga neck uses a bubinga center stripe for added stability and longer-term resistance to movement, and the ebony fretboard contributes the tight low end and sharp attack that keeps fast passages articulate. Pearl White with matching headstock gives the instrument a clean stage presence that reads well under lights.
