Hanika Natural Torres Cedar — A Professional Line Classical Guitar from Germany
The Hanika Natural Torres Cedar is a Professional Line classical guitar — the highest tier in the Hanika range. It combines a Grade 1 cedar soundboard with Grade 1 east Indian rosewood back and sides, Torres-inspired domed bracing, and Hanika's distinctive thin natural finish. The result is a concert instrument with outstanding dynamics, a warm and complex sound, clear note separation, and fast response across the entire range of the guitar.
Torres-Style Domed Bracing
The "Torres" in the model name refers to the bracing pattern — a 7-fold symmetrical domed design inspired by the work of Antonio de Torres, the 19th-century Spanish luthier whose instruments defined the modern classical guitar. Torres-style bracing uses a symmetrical fan pattern with a gently domed (arched) soundboard, which increases structural strength while allowing the top to be thinned for greater responsiveness. Compared to flat bracing designs, domed bracing tends to produce a rounder, more singing tone with strong sustain and a warm, complex overtone structure. Hanika builds their Torres soundboards in cedar, further enhancing the warmth and immediacy of the instrument's voice.
The Natural Finish — Thin Varnish and Wax Sealing
The "Natural" designation in the model name identifies Hanika's thinnest finish option. Rather than a traditional matte or high-gloss lacquer, the Natural finish uses a very thin varnish and wax sealing that protects the surface from typical playing wear while allowing the tonewoods to vibrate with minimal dampening. This finish is a significant factor in the Natural Torres Cedar's tonal character — it contributes to the open, transparent, and dynamically responsive sound that distinguishes the Natural models from their HE (high-gloss) counterparts. The trade-off is a finish that shows wear more readily over time, but many players consider this an acceptable exchange for the acoustic benefit.
Grade 1 Tonewoods and Construction
Professional Line instruments use Hanika's highest-graded tonewoods. The Grade 1 cedar soundboard and Grade 1 east Indian rosewood back and sides represent their most carefully selected sets, chosen for grain regularity, density, and acoustic properties. The neck is cedro with a double African blackwood core reinforcement for rigidity and long-term stability. The African blackwood fretboard, soundboard binding, back binding, and rosette continue the use of premium materials throughout the instrument. The C-1mm neck profile is slightly rounder than the D-profile used on the Recital Line models, a shape preferred by many concert players for its comfort during extended playing sessions.
Pierced Headplate and Rubner Sonido-E Tuning Machines
The Natural Torres Cedar features a pierced (openwork) headplate in rosewood, maple, and Makassar — a visual signature of the Professional Line that also reduces weight at the headstock. The guitar is fitted with Rubner Sonido-E tuning machines, a premium German-made machine with smooth, precise gear action. These are a clear step up from the R2 machines found on the Recital and Concert Line models.
Where the Natural Torres Cedar Fits in the Hanika Lineup
Hanika's Professional Line sits above the Concert Line and represents their top tier of production instruments. Within the Professional Line, the Natural models offer the same Grade 1 tonewoods and construction standards as the HE models but with the thin natural finish in place of high-gloss lacquer. This gives the Natural Torres Cedar a strong price-to-performance ratio — the acoustic benefit of the thinner finish combined with top-grade materials and construction, at a lower price point than the equivalent HE Torres Cedar. The guitar ships in a Hanika-Hiscox hardshell case.
